Native American Recognition

http://www.medicinemancreations.com/images/IndianWolfHead.gif
Today is recognized as Native American Day here in the U.S. In 1915, the Congress of the American Indian Association approved an American Indian DayPresident George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 National American Indian Heritage Month. Similar resolutions were signed during the years. In June, President Barack Obama signed the Native American Heritage Day Act of 2009. H. J. Res. 40 established a Native American Heritage Day in 2009 for Friday 27 November 2009. In May 1916, New York Governor Charles Whitman declared the first state American Indian Day in the nation. In 1990

I set on this day thinking about the past and where I have come and what went through my ancestors minds. How they led me to this place and allowed me to have this life. They sacraficed much to survive, many giving up their past and their designation as a Native American and being classsified as white to prevent them from being forced to move west. My European ancestry protected them and kept their secret. I have been able to trace many of my ancestors back to the early and late 1700's but there is a distinct period when there are no records to be found. As they changed their names and hid their past to simulate into the white population they left their past. Many are from my mothers side. Laws passed back in those times restricted land ownership in some states by those classified as Native American so they went into hiding. Most docuements I now have found list my ancestors as white but that is where it ends. Many I cannot find further information which is probably due to them changing their names and movement in those early times.

My ancestors seemed to move ahead of the conflicts that was fast approaching either through luck, by chance or seeing what was happening. They were moving north and west changing their name and going to places where few were settled. Coming from places in Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and into Indiana they moved with those they knew. It must have been a hard time as travel was not that easy. Eventually some moved farther west into Arkansas and Kansas. Most seemed to live near those areas with Native Americans and perhaps they were moving to be closer to their roots and family members that got caught in the forced removal. They continued to keep their designation as white. What a difficult secret to keep for so many years. I believe that my father and mother knew of this but never talked or discussed it even when they passed from this world.

Perhaps they have directed me to this point and it is time that the truth be known. That I cannot say but it is the path the creator has led me and one in which I shall follow. To where it will lead I do not know but I do believe it is the right thing to do and something that my ancestors wish. Perhaps it is what is called "ka-tet" or fate in Shawnee or "i yu da li s da ne di" in Cherokee. What ever it is the Creator has led me to this point and I shall follow that path in search of that which can never be lost.

May all be blessed and find the path that guides you in completing your circle that is life in this world. May your paths lead to much joy and happiness.

Let Us Give Thanks

Thanksgiving for many is a time for giving thanks for the many blessings we receive. My daughters brought home some homework from school recently about Thanksgiving. I have read much on the accounts from the Native American culture perspective. Now understand that the perception from one culture to another, changes and over time the stories seem to get murky as each add more to the original.

I would like to add some information that I have run across about my ancestors perspective on what really occurred on that first thanksgiving. My ancestors welcomed the majority of the immigrants to these shores. Though they were careful as for many years before there had been many of these ships passing through that had raided villages and taken my ancestors as slaves. Much of this is documented but not talked about in great detail. This happened up and down the coast to as far south as Florida . That is well established from all accounts. There was little conflict initially to these new immigrants from the original inhabitants. Conflicts did not arise until after they were settled and decided that my ancestors were savage and the need to conquer and take more than was needed. We all know about and read that the pilgrims invited the Natives to enjoy their bountiful harvest after their much needed help in establishing the colony. This is the story we all grew up with and continue to hear about. Understand that the first settlers were fearful of the Natives as they were small in numbers and the established tribes throughout the Americas were powerful to protect themselves from other tribes.

There were a large number of original inhabitants among various tribes throughout the Americas when the Europeans came to this land. That number was reduced significantly over the years through war and disease brought here by outsiders. From the Wampanoag oral history about that first Thanksgiving, it was not so much an invitation for a feast but an invitation to discuss a treaty and a deal to secure land for the pilgrims. It should also be noted that the Wampanoag brought the majority of food for this feast. The friendship and celebration was guarded at best as the trust that was felt was not taken as sincere. So when reading about the first thanksgiving, remember that much that is propagated in regards to this first feast. It is not always what it seems and was not the pretty picture you may see painted.

We all have things to be thankful for and should take this time to thank those that came before us. It is a time in which we should remember. Through it all my ancestors prevailed and being of both sides, ( Shawnee , Cherokee, German, English, French, Swiss, Swedish, Scot and Irish) I know that not all came here to just take and not return. Obviously, through what ever reason with the guidance of the Creator, my ancestors married and lived in two worlds and survived. May we all be thankful and respect each other. Knowing the truth of the past will let us build a better future.

2012

Much is to be said about the old ways. As many have heard or followed, the year 2012 is approaching quickly and many of the prophecies of the ancients are making the news or rounds on the Internet. We all have our particular beliefs and have our own feelings about this time. But like the humans that we are, if you believe many think it will be the end of the world. But if you really look at the prophecies, most do not predict the end of man but only that there will be a beginning to a new era of human evolution. A time of more awareness. As the time gets closer and there is more and more discussion about this time (and there will be) there will be much speculation on what will happen. But none will have the answer because it is beyond our comprehension of understanding.

Will there be cataclysmic event? Will the earth shift and cause our weather to change? Or will the day pass uneventful with all the news spouting that nothing happened and we are all still here? Who knows and to worry about that day is a waste of our energy, for we are in the world now and what we do today makes this world a better place tomorrow.

I believe as my ancestors did that we are on a path in our lives in which we make decisions that change our circle of life. Our beginning and end are set but how we travel through this world is of our choosing. To follow the Red Path that leads us to good and helping others and knowing ourselves is the one in which we desire to travel. As with my ancestors tradition, to walk the Red Road means to live within the Creator's rules-a life of truth, friendship, respect, spirituality, and humanitarianism. This wisdom and belief continue to be handed down through teachings and oral tradition from elders, parents, teachers, and spiritual leaders with their wisdom and demonstrating their values from generation to generation, leading others down the path of self-discovery and enlightenment.

Understanding

Understanding

There are many things that are very hard to explain and for others to understand. It is not uncommon, many times we learn about another culture or belief and understand from the point of having that knowledge. But we as humans have a difficult time truly knowing the feeling that someone who lives or believes in it knows.

When I write about my Native culture, providing knowledge or information, it is hard for many who do not believe or cannot put it in terms that they know to understand the beliefs. Many ceremonies that are performed today have a rich and long history. No different than other cultures rituals or ceremonies. Because our beliefs are not a religion but one of spirituality it is hard for many to comprehend. The structure of the dominant culture wherever it is, tends to put the norm or standard in place and that is what is expected. To continue to understand and gain knowledge helps us to know that there are differences and even commonalities between all beliefs and cultures.

What always amazes me is that many beliefs and cultures are the same in many ways. As I have said often in the past is that people don’t change, just the faces. We all have developed as humans the same set of abilities to comprehend but that comprehension changes due to our culture or beliefs passed down. My belief that all things are living and have a spirit is sometimes hard to understand when you think of a non-living breathing entity. Mountains for example, most just look at it as a rock but it has a purpose and touches us in different ways. Its ability to protect and shield others and us gives it life. It collects rain and snow and then forms the path in which it flows to the lower ground. This ability gives us and other beings water. It even provides the ability for things to live and grow on it. It gives life in many ways.

I hope this makes sense and perhaps gives some a little more to think about. The Creator is a mystery but has allowed us the ability to form, grow, and learn.

Road in the Heart

There is a road in the hearts of all of us, hidden and seldom traveled,

which leads to an unknown, secret place.
The old people came literally to love the soil,
and they sat or reclined on the ground with a feeling of
being close to a mothering power.
Their teepees were built upon the earth
and their altars were made of earth.
The soul was soothing, strengthening, cleansing and healing.
That is why the old Indian still sits upon the earth instead of
propping himself up and away from its life giving forces.
For him, to sit or lie upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply
and to feel more keenly. He can see more clearly into the mysteries of
life and come closer in kinship to other lives about him.

Fact or Fiction

Fact or Fiction

An interesting comment was made on my blog “Spirit” that got me thinking. Thank you Grandpa Dewey for you comment. By definition folklore is a traditional belief, legend, custom, etc. of a people. The lore of a people, it is also a body of widely held but false or unsubstantiated beliefs. That leaves the door open for many things. Folklore could include many things that we hold as truths today but have been unsubstantiated and believe. That does not make them not true but only that they cannot be proven. If something is written it does not prove it as fact.

I believe as many others that there are many things that may never be proven. My ancestors left mainly an oral history and it was passed down for many years. As with our written history and oral histories they can be changed with each writing or time they are told with the interpretation of the writer or teller.

There have been many things that were believed to be folklore or stories that later were witnessed by others that could not be explained. That is the power of the things we are unable to comprehend and the great mystery of our Creator. We seem to be able to accept things from the dominant society (who ever they may be) with little question but these beliefs from other cultures are at times waved off as folklore or legend. This has happened throughout history.

I believe that there is truth in many things that are what many call folklore, legends or myths. They are based on some point of fact or helped in explaining what happened, it gave a reason for something that cannot be explained. It helps us to cope.

My beliefs are many and I have studied much to gain knowledge. No one is wrong or completely right in a belief. It is just that, a belief and what is true to you is what matters. As I believe that the spirit exists in all things and even the smallest rock. Each thing in this world has a purpose even if we cannot understand it.

Be safe and have a wonderful weekend. I wish many blessings to everyone.

Spirit

The Cherokee believed that every aspect and thing had a spirit presiding over it, but did not hold a belief in multiple gods. All things that made a shadow was believed to have a spirit. All figures that the Europeans identified, as 'gods' were simply greater beings in the Cherokee belief whose names were so great there were no English words for them, and thus they were recognized as 'gods' by non-natives. However, the Cherokee paid direct respect to and worshipped only the Creator.

Numbers

Certain numbers within the Native American culture are important. The numbers 4 and 7 seem to be the most prevalent and appear many times in the oral history in myths, stories and ceremonies. The number four in many tribes represents the four directions and the forces that are present in our everyday life. Many times these are associated with colors and meaning also. These vary with tribal customs and culture. The number Seven is a very sacred and important number within the Native American Culture. You can see it reference across many tribes.

In the Sioux tradition, there were seven ceremonies taught to the elders by the Buffalo Calf Woman and presented them with the sacred pipe. This pipe was to be used in seven rites or ceremonies that were taught to them in dreams. The Sioux were also divided into four branches that were the Teaton or Lakota, the Santee, the Yankton, and the Yanktonai or Nakota. These branches also included bands that made up the overall group. Within the Cherokee, there were 7 clans, the Long Hair, Blue, Bird, Paint, Wild Potato, Wolf and Deer.

The number Four within the Cherokee represents the four directions (representing the four cardinal points)but also include Three others. These include up for the upper world or sky, down for the lower world including Mother Earth and Center, which represents the middle or you. Center is where you always are, your being. The number seven within the Cherokee also was the highest level of purity and sacredness and the hardest to attain.

These are but two examples; other Native cultures have other numbers and symbols that are of great importance that were passed down through the oral history.

FOR THOSE OF US WHO REMEMBER ...............

Hollywood Squares:

For those who don’t know the game, the Hollywood Squares is an American television comedy and game show in which two contestants play tic-tac-toe to win money (cash) and prizes. The "board" for the game is a 3 × 3 vertical stack of open-faced cubes, each occupied by an entertainer (or "star") seated at a desk and facing the contestants. The stars are asked questions and the contestants judge the veracity of their answers in order to win the game.

These great questions and answers are from the days when ' Hollywood Squares' game show responses were spontaneous, not scripted, as they are now. Peter Marshall was the host asking the questions, of course.

Q.  Paul, what is a good reason for pounding meat?
A. Paul Lynde (about five minutes later):  Lone l i ness!
And the audience laughed for another 10 minutes.

Q. Do female frogs croak?
A. Paul Lynde: If you hold their little heads under water long enough.

Q.
If you're going to make a parachute jump, at least how high should you be?
A. Charley Weaver: Three days of steady drinking should do it.

Q. True or False, a pea can last as long as 5,000 years.
A. George Gobel: Boy, it sure seems that way sometimes.

Q. You've been having trouble going to sleep. Are you probably a man or a woman?
A. Don Knotts: That's what's been keeping me awake.

Q. According to Cosmopolitan, if you meet a stranger at a party and you think he's attractive, is it okay to come out and ask him if he's married?
A. Rose Marie: No, wait until morning.

Q. Which of your five senses tends to diminish as you get older?
A. Charley Weaver: My sense of decency.

Q. In Hawaiian, does it take more than three words to say 'I Love You'?
A. Vincent Price: No, you can say it with a pineapple and a twenty.

Q. What are 'Do It,' 'I Can Help,' and 'I Can't Get Enough'?
A. George Gobel: I don't know, but it's coming from the next apartment.

Q. As you grow older, do you tend to gesture more or less with your hands while talking?
A. Rose Marie: You ask me one more growing old question Peter, and I'll give you a gesture you'll never forget.

Q. Paul, why do Hell's Angels wear leather?
A. Paul Lynde: Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.

Q. Charley, you've just decided to grow strawberries. Are you going to get any during the first year?
A. Charley Weaver: Of course not, I'm too busy growing strawberries.

Q. In bowling, what's a perfect score?
A. Rose Marie: Ralph, the pin boy.

Q. It is considered in bad taste to discuss two subjects at nudist camps. One is politics, what is the other?
A. Paul Lynde: Tape measures.

Q. During a tornado, are you safer in the bedroom or in the closet?
A. Rose Marie: Unfortunately Peter, I'm always safe in the bedroom.

Q. Can boys join the Camp Fire Girls?
A. Marty Allen: Only after lights out.

Q. When you pat a dog on its head he will wag his tail. What will a goose do?
A. Paul Lynde: Make him bark?

Q. If you were pregnant for two years, what would you give birth to?
A. Paul Lynde: Whatever it is, it would never be afraid of the dark.

Q. According to Ann Landers, is there anything wrong with getting into the habit of kissing a lot of people?
A. Charley Weaver: It got me out of the army.

Q. It is the most abused and neglected part of your body, what is it?
A. Paul Lynde: Mine may be abused, but it certainly isn't neglected.

Q. Back in the old days, when Great Grandpa put horseradish on his head, what was he trying to do?
A. George Gobel: Get it in his mouth.

Q. Who stays pregnant for a longer period of time, your wife or your elephant?
A. Paul Lynde: Who told you about my elephant?

Q. When a couple have a baby, who is responsible for its sex?
A. Charley Weaver: I'll lend him the car, the rest is up to him.

Q. Jackie Gleason recently revealed that he firmly believes in them and has actually seen them on at least two occasions. What are they?
A. Charley Weaver: His feet.

Q. According to Ann Landers, what are two things you should never do in bed?

Garage Door

The boss walked into the office one morning not knowing his zipper was down and his fly area wide open. His assistant walked up to him and said, 'This morning when you left your house, did you close your garage door?' The boss told her he knew he'd closed the garage door, and walked into his office puzzled by the question.

As he finished his paperwork, he suddenly noticed his fly was open, and zipped it up. He then understood his assistant's question about his 'garage door.'

He headed out for a cup of coffee and paused by her desk to ask, 'When my garage door was open, did you see my Hummer parked in there?'

She smiled and said, 'No, I didn't. All I saw was an old mini van with two flat tires..
